As I already stated the people are what matters to me. They are essential in how you experience a travel. Only by talking to locals you can truly understand how a country and a society works.
So doesn’t it suggest itself to spend as much time with locals as possible? For me it does and the way I do it is by staying directly with them whenever I can. That is made possible by the Couchsurfing community. On that platform people offer their couch, mattress, bed or whatever they have to travelers for the sake of an exchange of experiences. For me Couchsurfing is not about having a place to sleep somewhere but more about meeting new interesting people and with that discover a place from its heart.
Of course it feels a little awkward at first to knock on a stranger’s door to stay with him in his home. But once you passed that short moment you’ll most certainly feel welcomed as if you were staying with a friend ‘cause Couchsurfers share that mindset of a connected world. You’ll come close to someone that you probably would have never met otherwise. And you have the chance to truly learn something about the place that tourists can never see but only locals can pass on to you.
It makes my travels much more colorful, social and exciting whenever I stay with a Couchsurfer. And sometimes I find connections that lead into a deep friendship as it happened to me with my New York hosts. I only stayed with them for a weekend but we immediately felt that deeper connection that made me come back to New York each and every year since we’ve met. I count them to my „heart friends“ by now all thanks to Couchsurfing. Probably that story is kind of the rare exception but I managed to keep on touch with some other Couchsurfers as well.
All of that gives me the feeling to have friends all around the world. Some I know already and some I still have to find and meet.
